Short History of the City of Lima
Lima, also known as "The Royal city", was founded on 6th January 1535 on the banks of the river Rimac by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro since the site presented good geographical and strategic qualities. The word "Lima" comes from Rimac, which in the Quechua language means "Talkative". At the time of the Viceroyalty, between the 16th and 17th centuries, Lima became the most important and the most powerful city of this side of South America, being the centre of all commercial and cultural activities. On 28th July 1821, following the fall of the viceroyalty and the spread of pro'independence political movements, General Jose de San Martin proclaimed the independence of Peru, thus commencing the Republican period.
